What is the most common problem with the Alcon Centurion?

The most common problem is the Alcon Centurion foot pedal.  It can collect debris which will make it fail before, during or after surgery.  The foot pedal needs to be cleaned after each case.

The Alcon Centurion Foot pedal states that it needs service. Can I fix it in house?
Yes if you have the training, and if you do not, we can do it for you.  If you really want to do the work in house, we can train you and supply the parts to service the Constellation Footswitch.
Do you have B&L Stellaris service?

Yes and we are less expensive than the OEM.

What is the most common failure with the B&L Stellaris?
The vacuum slowly degrades over time.  A routine service will identify the degrading vacuum with the B&L Stellaris.  The cost to repair is over $12,000 and MEDiSURG can rebuild the vacuum pump for $6000.  When we catch the system failing, we can remedy the problem before you have to replace or rebuild the pump system.
Alcon says that they are the only technicians qualified to service the Alcon system, is that true?

Yes and no.  The Alcon Phaco systems are a collection of mechanical parts and software.  The mechanical parts can be repaired or replaced.  The software is propiertary and only Alcon can update features or reload software.  It is very rare that the software fails.  If the computer fails, then the HOST Computer will need to be exchanged.  Alcon sends the computer with the software loaded and our technicians can update the serial numbers in the software.  We also have refurbished HOST modules in stock that we can swap the hard drive and save you thousands of dollars.

My Alcon system error states CPU battery needs to be replaced, is this critical? Can I still do surgery?

Yes you can still use the system.  The CPU battery keeps the time and date current.  All of the settings for the surgeon are on the hard drive and are not affected by the Alcon CPU Battery.

My Alcon Infiniti systems states the 12 volt backup battery needs to be replaced. Can we use the system?
Yes you can continue with surgery.  Call and make an appointment with our tech service team and get it replaced, plus get a proper PM completed.  The 12 volt battery is designed to shut down the windows computer software if the AC power fails.  The windows software can get corrupt if the power is removed suddenly.  It does not typically cause a problem and it is recommended to replace the 12 volt battery every 5 years.  Our MEDiSURG technicians replace both the CPU and 12 volt backup battery the first time we service a system.  This way we know it is fresh and will prevent the error message if the Alcon Tech Service rep did not replace the batteries.
How can I get a list of the error codes for my Alcon Constellation?
If you look online, you can sometimes find a PDF version of the error codes. You can get them for free when you complete a training course.  If you want a copy, drop us a note.  You could contact Alcon Tech Service at 800-832-7827 and they may send you a PDF version. Biomeds have been successful in the past getting a copy from Alcon.

Where can I get training for my surgical technicians on how to use my Alcon Constellation system in surgery.
There are videos available online and if you want hands on training, MEDiSURG has a surgical technician training bootcamp that will give you the hands on training and the trouble shooing skills to solve the most common errors.
